Divinize Your Senses

How fortunate we are to have been born and raised in India, where from birth we are blessed with hearing God’s name. Throughout our lives, God’s names resound. We greet a family member, friend, work colleague or neighbour with His name. Many of us have named our children after God, and for some of us, His name comprises the password on our computer and even our bank account! God’s name is part of our daily life, whether it’s just casually saying hello, calling your son or daughter or sincerely chanting His glories in a temple. With His name being called so much, some of you may be curious to know why we should love Him?

This is a profound question requiring study and deep reflection. At its root, however, is a widely held but false notion. If we could see Him first, then we could love Him. Why doesn’t He manifest before us? He is Almighty God after all, and anything is possible for Him. Such assertions are naïve and utterly impossible, even in this material realm.

Firstly, you may be surprised to know that our scriptures reveal that over infinite lives we have seen God. We have? Yes, but our material senses prevented us from perceiving His divinity. He instead appeared to us as a debonair youth, a darling child, or a lovable rascal. God has descended innumerable times in this world, and we were present. However, the material medium of our senses will never be able to intercept a divine frequency.

Secondly, many of you would be graduates from high school, college, or university. Did any of you get your degree before studying the course and passing the examinations? You probably have caught a bus, train, or aeroplane. Did you reach your destination without first purchasing the ticket and arriving before the scheduled departure? To attain anything in the world, you first acquire its knowledge and then practically apply it. This same logic is also applicable to the attainment of God.

It is only when your senses become divine through the grace of your Guru, once your heart is 100 percent purified, that you will be able to see, hear, taste, smell, and touch God. Without divine senses, you will never perceive, understand, or experience God’s true divine form and bliss. An insect living on a neem tree eating its bitter leaves to survive will never understand or know what sweetness is.

Renounce this fallacy and get on with acquiring true spiritual knowledge and practicing devotion under the guidance of a bona fide spiritual teacher in order to become eligible to receive God’s grace, and then through your Guru, your senses will be spiritualized. Instantly, you will perceive God in all His glory everywhere and within every living being — animate and inanimate.
